Water quality
Water softeners and whole-home filtration in Kansas City
Hard water is the reason scale builds up inside your appliances, your glasses come out of the dishwasher cloudy, and your water heater does not last as long as the sticker on the side says it should.
What we work on
Water treatment services
Two different problems, and two different machines. A softener handles the minerals. Filtration handles everything else.
Water softeners
Installation, repair and salt-free alternatives. Sized to your water and your household rather than to whatever the truck was loaded with.
Whole-home filtration
Sediment, taste, chlorine and iron. Filtration and softening are different jobs and plenty of houses only need one of them.
Kansas City water
How hard the water is depends on who supplies it
City water across the metro typically runs from about 6 to 10 grains per gallon, and some suburban districts run far harder. These are the utilities’ own published averages, which is exactly why we test at your tap before recommending any equipment.
KC Water, Kansas City, Missouri
About 100 milligrams per liter, roughly 6 grains per gallon. KC Water describes it as moderately hard.
WaterOne, Johnson County
An average of 144 parts per million, about 8.4 grains per gallon, across a range of roughly 7 to 10.
Independence, and the cities that buy from it
About 123 milligrams per liter, roughly 7 grains per gallon. Blue Springs and Lee’s Summit buy part of their water from Independence, so their blend can differ.
Some suburban districts
Much harder. Suburban Water, which serves Basehor, reports about 340 milligrams per liter, around 20 grains per gallon.
If you have a tankless water heater
Scale is hardest on a tankless heat exchanger, and Navien’s warranty excludes damage from hard water deposits. Softening or conditioning the water protects the unit and keeps it inside those terms. See tankless water heaters.

Treatment sized to what is in your water
Filtration and softening get sold together and solve different problems. We test first and install what the result calls for.

Frequently Asked Questions
How hard is Kansas City water?
Hard enough to matter for appliances across most of the metro, and it varies by supplier and by where you sit in the system. That is why we test at your tap rather than quoting from a map.
Do I need a softener?
If you have scale on fixtures, cloudy glassware and a water heater that has not made it past ten years, probably. If none of that is happening, you may not need one.
Does a softener make water safe to drink?
No. A softener deals with hardness minerals. If your concern is taste, chlorine or sediment, that is filtration, and they are separate pieces of equipment.
Salt-free systems: do they work?
They condition rather than soften, which means they change how minerals behave instead of removing them. For scale protection they can help. If you want the slippery feel of softened water, they will not give you that, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling.
Will it help my water heater last longer?
Yes, measurably, and the same goes for the dishwasher and the washing machine. It is the strongest argument for softening and it is worth more than the feel of the water. It matters even more on a tankless unit, because Navien’s warranty excludes scale damage. See tankless water heaters.
